Jalimadi And the Holy Family Band came to be best known in Gambia for their hit Bul Falleh Nyee in 2012, but the band has a long history in the modern Gambian music scene. Though the band consists largely of self-taught musicians, their talent and professionalism is indisputable: Jalimadi and The Holy Family Band has performed and collaborated with all the most renowned musicians in Gambia.
Jalimadi And the Holy Family Band uses a lot of western influences in their music. Their upcoming debut album, for example, combines modern styles, such as hip hop, with traditional African music. The band’s roots, however, are deep, deep in African soil, especially in the griot tradition.

I wanted to combine traditional music with modern stuff, because I’m from the home of the griot. My father was a griot, but he has passed away. So I have to take his place and do the same thing. I’m the only one in my family who can do that now, says lead vocalist Jali Madi Kanuteh.

Like the rest of the band members also Jalimadi has made a long career in music despite his young age. He began learning music at the axe of six and launched his musical career when he was only sixteen-years-old. Music was a natural choice for Jalimadi, since he comes from a very musical family: his mother Sainabou Tunkara is a backing vocalist and a dancer, and his father Alhaji Banna Kanuteh was a traditional griot-singer and one of the most renowned musicians in Gambia. He, among other things, led The Gambian National Troupe orchestra and worked in Radio Gambia for more than fifteen years.

– I never got any official training in music. I got it from my family, from my father. He was a good musician and a professional, so there was no need for me to go somewhere else to learn about music. He taught me everything.

In the future, Jalimadi And the Holy Family Band wishes to concentrate on live performances, and not just in Gambia but also in other parts of Africa – and the world.
